Dianne Hoodless - 60 second interview

Reward Strategy are joined by Dianne Hoodless in the latest ’60 second interview’

Q: Has your job role been taken more seriously during the pandemic?

I think the profession as a whole has, prior to the current pandemic, payroll was mainly seen as an office-based role, but due to Covid-19, without any opportunity to plan or rehearse, payrolls are been run remotely, adapting to payroll professionals life styles, such has home working and home schooling, so becoming more flexible. I believe this to be the case with many businesses across the sector.

It is interesting to note that all payroll professional were put into the category of key workers by the Department for Education. The confirmation came following an urgent memo from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) which stated that payroll workers fall under the category of ‘utilities, communications and financial services’ and are therefore deemed essential as a frontline service.

This meant that all payroll professionals had to follow the official government recommendations to confirm their key worker status with their employer and proceed with any business continuity arrangements that are in place.

Q: How has your pay and reward strategy changed in the last 12 months?

I have not seen a change yet but more of a move to employee’s wellbeing and mental health. Which has been vital with more of us working remotely. The organisation put on virtual wellbeing events such as Yoga, Wellbeing & back care classes, Mindfulness and Pilates to mention just few. The support we have had has been outstanding but we are a people first organisation

Q: What is your main focus for the new year?

I do wish I had a crystal ball to see what would be coming our way or what challenges and changes we will face, but what I do know is that payroll professional will meet the challenges full on and ensure employee and the organisations are paid accurately, on time and conforming to legislation, the payroll professionals mission statement.

Q: Without giving too much away, what two things will delegates learn from your session?

Payroll is a profession and we are passionate about payroll

Q: What other sessions are you looking forward to at this year’s Reward & Payroll Summit?

There are so many but one close to my heart is “The future of reward: From fertility benefits to menopause policies” and of course the payroll updates.

Not a session but I am so excited about the Rewards too, recognition those who have gone above and beyond in their profession.
