HMRC has updated its Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) figures to be accurate as of midnight on June 14.

Last Wednesday (June 10), was the final date by which an employer could furlough an employee for the first time.

As of June 7, the number of jobs furloughed stood at 8.9 million with the total value of claims coming to £19.6bn. 

The number of employers using the scheme has remained at 1.1 million since the end of May, but the number of jobs furloughed is now 9.1 million with a total value of claims hitting £20.8bn.

Employers are now only able to furlough a sub-sector of employees for the first time, but this can’t be the employer’s first claim - they must already be using the CJRS for other employees.

The sub-sector of employees includes those who return to work from statutory maternity, adoption and shared parental leave after June 10.

The scheme will run until the end of October, with flexible furloughing coming into force from July 1.

This element of the scheme means employees furloughed can come back to work part-time and the CJRS will continue to fund the non-working time.

July 1 is also an important date for employers, as from this point on the number of employees an employer claims for, in any claim period, cannot exceed the maximum number they have claimed for under any previous claim.
