How to prove value in payroll

The payroll function quite often has difficulty in proving its value to the wider organisation, that’s why Reward Strategy wants to help promote its importance.

It is also one of the reasons why we introduced the Payroll Top 50 in 2009 - an index of the most influential leaders in the profession.

The index has since grown to become The Reward 300 and now reflects the leading lights in payroll, reward, HR, employee benefits, workplace pensions and the associated sectors.

Entries to The Reward 300 2020 close tomorrow, so make sure to enter now if you are a pay and reward professional who has:

• Shown a level of influence in their organisation or profession;

• Demonstrated best practice;

• Been recognised for their work (through award programmes, not necessarily Reward Strategy’s);

• Helped to educate their peers, whether that be through content contributions, speaking at conferences or webinars, and so on;

• Advocated the promotion of their profession.

Reward Strategy will also be publishing a feature, in Issue 221 of its print magazine, to highlight the importance of payroll. As part of our research, we spoke to a range of professionals to find out how they’ve proved payroll’s value to the wider organisation. Here are some snippets:

Suzanne Forbes, payroll and compliance manager at Equifax UK, promoted a fully compliant, yet complex HMRC employer review she carried out to the organisation to show how important it is for a company a dedicated payroller.

Dorota Luniak, payroll specialist at NewDay, proved the function’s value, at a previous company, by training all managers and administrators how to use the time and attendance system.

She said: “I was very proactive and approachable. I showed them how to spot and correct any errors and discrepancies with the clocking records. This ensured my payroll data was of good quality and there were minimal queries after each payroll. The employees were happy to be paid correctly, which in turn improved the staff’s morale and reduced the high turnover.”

Ian Davis, head of payroll and business support at Direct Line Group, has proved payroll’s value by nominating his team for industry awards and, therefore, achieving the CIPP’s Payroll Assurance Scheme Accreditation. He said this shows the business that the services payroll provides are benchmarked highly against the external industry standards.

The Reward 300 will be announced at a gala dinner, sponsored by Cintra HR & Payroll Services and JGA Recruitment, following the first day of the Payroll & Reward Conference 2020 on June 3.

The evening will boast a sparkling drinks reception, three course fine dining and live entertainment with panoramic views across the Chelsea Harbour Marina and the River Thames.

If you would like to attend the events, we are currently offering a discounted rate until March 20th.

To book, or find out more about speaking opportunities or sponsorship, please speak to our commercial director, Ben Miller, by calling 020 7940 4803 or email. Or, take a look at the event website here.
