Northover will be speaking at the conference, taking place on December 5th at the Hilton London Bankside. Discounted tickets to the conference are limited, save £100 by booking before Friday (November 15th).

Reward Strategy (RS): What has been the story of your career so far?

Julie Northover (JN): “‘So far’ sounds like I have many years to come to serve our glorious payroll industry; after 42 years, I doubt that is the case!

“Payroll has been, and still is, my passion and in recent years I have been honoured to have been included in your prestigious Reward 300 indexes. This year I also obtained CIPP Individual Chartered Member Status, so I like to think that these accolades are all recognition of my contributions to the world of payroll ‘so far.”

RS: What do you think has been the most visible change to the payroll and HR profession in the last year?

JN: “The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into force on May 25 2018 and impacted the daily routines for all professions, especially ours.

“Payroll bureaus with smaller clients also felt the impact, with resistance from employers that did not want the burden of conforming to the additional security measures required of GDPR. It was a case of ‘don’t shoot the messenger’, as bureaus desperately coaxed clients to communicate via secure portals and encrypted emails.”

RS: What do you think are currently and will be the biggest trials facing global payroll professionals?
JN:
“There are always challenges facing payroll professionals where guidance and/or more detailed guidance is desperately awaited from government agencies.

“IR35 reforms in the private sector and the extension on holiday pay calculations are just a couple that are currently causing concern. Though they impact payroll from April 2020, there are many questions still to be answered before organisations can possibly implement any of them effectively and efficiently.”

RS: What is going to be the biggest area of investment for your clients’ payroll function in the next 12 months?

JN: “The IR35 reforms in the private sector, from April 2020, will see one on my clients increasing their payroll by a huge 62 percent. Consequently, the related costs to the organisation are considerable.”

RS: Without giving too much away, what will delegates learn from your session?

JN: “I am delivering a workshop on IR35 which should be interactive and provide a summary of the latest guidance available. Some of my friends and colleagues from the private sector will also be joining me and sharing their experiences, having already been affected by the Intermediaries Legislation in 2017.”

RS: What other sessions are you looking forward to at this year’s Autumn Update?

JN: “I always look forward to all of the sessions, as it is so good to hear other industry experts imparting their knowledge, guidance and wisdom. Sometimes I regret not being able to split myself in two!”
