Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 programme Money Box, Sajid Javid said the party is committed to conducting a review into what the government could do to lend more support to the self-employed community, adding that “one thing in particular” he wanted to look at was the proposed changes to IR35.

From April 6 2020, medium or large-sized businesses in the private and voluntary sector will be responsible for assessing whether contractors need to pay income tax and National Insurance contributions NICs. Previously, such checks have been carried out by contractors themselves.

Javid said: “I want to make sure that the proposed changes are right to take forward.

“We’ve already said that we’re on the side of self-employed people. We will be having a review and I think it makes sense to include IR35 in that review.”
