At Autumn Statement 2016, chancellor of the exchequer Philp Hammond announced that there would only be a single fiscal event each year. As such, the March 2017 Budget (aka Spring Budget 2017) would be the final Spring Budget and would be followed by an Autumn Budget.
In a YouTube announcement linked to Gov.uk, Mr Hammond has confirmed that this will be held on 22 November 2017. He said:
“One of the most important dates in the Parliamentary calendar is Budget day, when I as chancellor of the exchequer go to the House of Commons and review our economic performance, set out our plans for raising the taxes that we need over the coming years, and how we intend to spend them to support our public services. It’s also when we set out our thinking on how to keep the economy strong and resilient and fair. An economy that works for everyone. I can announce that this autumn’s Budget will be held on 22 November.”
We can expect another Finance Bill to follow the Autumn Budget, with the aim of reaching Royal Assent before the start of the tax year – I am losing track of how many there have been in 2017!
