National Payroll Week has begun, so we take a moment to chat to Reward 300 member John Stonestreet, head of payroll and pensions at Essex & Kent Police.
Stonestreet will be speaking at the Payroll & Reward Conference, ran in partnership with The Payroll Centre, taking place digitally this week on September 8th and 9th.
Reward Strategy (RS): How did you come to work in payroll?
John Stonestreet (JS): “I think like the majority of people, I just fell into it. I was working in HR and was asked to help the payroll team for a few weeks - and that was more than 25 years ago!”
RS: How would you describe a payoller in three words?
JS: “Selfless, diligent and flexible.”
RS: What moment in your career are you most proud of?
JS: “It’s the small victories that keep me motivated, rather than large milestones. Whether it be the moment the penny drops when explaining something technical in plain English or when implementing a new process which will save time, money or both in the long-run; it’s the small wins.”
RS: Why is it important National Payroll Week is celebrated?
JS: “I think everyone will say this but, payroll isn’t actually a mythical big red button. There’s real value that professional and trained payroll staff can bring to an organisation and it’s important to recognise that.”
The Payroll & Reward Conference, sponsored by Ceridian, Cintra HR & Payroll Services, SD Worx, Frontier Software and the CIPP, has a range of free and discounted passes available to attend. Book now by contacting James Hunter on email or 020 7940 4821.
