Employees rank managers highest in creative industries

The media and internet sectors are happiest with their management according to a new survey by Casino Hawks

With recent reports stating as many as two in five employees have quit their jobs due to bad management, a need to understand the correlation between positive management and different industries is quite critical.

In a recent UK survey of 29 different job sectors, employees in retail, healthcare and sales reported the least satisfaction with their management. Low pay, micromanagement and lack of communication were cited as top reasons for their negative perception, while people working in the creative arts and design and charity and voluntary industries had the most positive attitude towards their managers.

On the back of the UK survey, Casino Hawks explored US industries to understand which had the most popular management practices and which factors most benefited the relationship between employer and employee.

Findings showed 84.4 % of employees in the media and internet industries had a good opinion of their managers with a whopping 95.2% in the 18-34 category stating a positive attitude towards them. Gender discrepancies revealed 86.8% of females, compared to 75% of males like their boss in this sector, with good management cited as the reason.

The second top industry for managerial satisfaction came out in both countries as the charity and volunteer sector with 82.9% of US respondents expressing a positive view, along with 89% in the UK. Males in this industry exhibited the highest fondness for their bosses compared to any other industry analysed, at 81.4%. This sits in stark contrast with the sales sector where a mere 24.7% of all staff claimed a positive relationship with their boss.

In third place were the Information Technology (IT) industries. Bosses here rated positively among 78.3% of employees, although interestingly the UK ranked even higher in this sector with 88% of staff satisfied with their management.  To highlight the percentage scale across industries, this figure was 46.5% higher than the 10th place industry -- teaching and education.

The IT sector did show disparity among the ages -- while 86.5% of 18-34 years olds expressed positivity towards their boss, the number was only 63.2% among 50–69-year-olds. Interestingly, for women across the survey, this was the most positive industry for boss employee relationships, as expressed by 94.1% of female respondents.

Ranking lowest of all  for staff employee satisfaction in the US were the sales industries, closely followed by retail, where 47% of US employees were dissatisfied with their bosses. Only 23.4% of 50–69-year-olds in sales reported a positive opinion of their boss, similar to 25.4% of 35-49 year olds. This was also an industry where females disliked their boss the most with only 22.6% having positive feelings towards their manager, compared to 26.3% of men.
