AI anxiety persists

AI Adoption increases in SMEs but staff confidence lags behind

New research reveals a growing divide between SME employers and employees when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI). While business leaders are largely optimistic, many staff are anxious about the impact of AI on their roles and they’re calling for clearer communication and more support.

According to data from Uswitch.com, 33% of SME employees are concerned about AI’s long-term impact on their jobs, and nearly one in five (20%) say they feel frightened about what AI could mean for their career.

Meanwhile, employers are pushing ahead. Over a third of small business owners describe themselves as excited (35%) about AI’s potential, and 41% say they’re eager to learn more. They view AI as essential for staying competitive in a fast-changing economy.

While employers see AI as a tool for growth, their workforce feels less prepared:

  • 42% of employees say they need more training to confidently use AI tools
  • 30% want more reassurance about job security
  • 28% are hesitant to even use AI
  • 17% feel directly threatened by AI’s potential

This reveals a fundamental disconnect. Without the right upskilling and transparency, AI risks becoming a source of stress rather than innovation.

Uswitch business savings expert Andy Elder urges employers to take action. “Employers and employees don’t always see eye to eye on AI, and that’s understandable. But open dialogue and mutual understanding are essential,” he said.

Elder recommends five key actions for businesses. Clear communication, regularly explaining how and why AI is being used. He also emphasises investment in training, addressing job security concerns, leading by example and showing how AI supports, not replaces, human roles and choosing tools wisely - prioritise AI that enhances creativity and productivity.

With businesses facing economic pressures and skills shortages, aligning leadership enthusiasm with real workforce support will be crucial to making AI work for everyone.
