Should employees dictate the way they work?

It’s been said that employees entering the workplace, such as Generation Z, often try to dictate to new employers how they want to work.

In a recent RS Interview with Megan O’Shaughnessy, senior reward specialist in consumer at BT, Reward Strategy asked if it’s right new generations dictate to the workforce this way.

 

She said: “I think there’s an element of them going too far, but if you look at flexible working for people who come back after maternity leave - that’s the workforce dictating how workplaces have to accommodate people. It’s the same sort of thing.”

 

In another RS Interview with Tim Robertson, head of reward at ITN, Reward Strategy asked a similar question: Do you think younger, more demanding generations entering the workplace is positive? How will you manage the demands?

 

He said: “I think it is what it is. Companies really have to deal with that. If that’s who they want to attract, they have to be flexible.

 

“It’s a good thing. I think reward will have to adapt to the wants of younger generations - because companies offer long-term benefits, such as gym memberships and pensions, which aren’t going to be attractive to the younger generations who have portfolio careers.

 

“It forces us to think in different ways about how we can create more mobile benefits that people can take with them when they hop from job to job.”

 

Deciding how best to serve Generation Z and all other generations in the workplace, both O’Shaughnessy and Robertson will take part in a panel session at the Autumn Update Conference, in London, on December 5th.

 

The reward professionals will look into the segmentation of rewards and how to tailor strategies for both different generations and different personalities.

 

This is the 15th year the conference has been running and its content has been structured to focus on the widening remit of payroll into reward.
